With two laps to go in the season opener for IROC in 2001, Eddie Cheever make an extremely aggressive move for the lead that put Dale Earnhardt Sr. in the turn 1 grass. Earnhardt some how maintained car control to finish seventh. Meanwhile there was an amazing 5-car battle for the lead where the margin of victory was a mere fourteen one-thousands of a second.

  • Did Tony Stewart do the same move in the Busch Race in 2005 that Earnhardt did in this IROC Race?

  • Yes

  • Bring BACK IROC!

  • This is great car control 2x's. First he is forced down to the grass and maintains TOTAL control into the turn and thru, Second he basically PITS Cheevers and does it where cheevers is in no danger - REST IN PEACE.

  • IROC cars had hand-me-down cup engines. I believe that now that NASCAR needs their engines bc of economy, they dont have the money for IROC

  • Only Earnhardt, Gordon, Tony or Kyle could of saved that car, what a talent

Dale was, Great Talent...... Sure miss da Man,,,, Great Human Being,,,

  • sigh and to think Earnhardt would have similar trouble in the same year only in a cup car and in turn 3 and 4 ...... WE MISS YOU DALE!!! R.I.P.

  • damn those are some pretty cars

  • That was a pretty awesome finish. Thanks for posting it! I captured this and had it on TBK years ago.

  • @knoxstar15 Did you actually READ my post? If you had, you would've noticed that I never mentioned the need for unregulated, unlimited blocking. I was refering to what Cheever did to Jarrett on the backstretch on the last lap. Cheever blocked the inside line and forced Jarrett to the middle of the track. Cheever stayed on the inside and Jarrett went past him. It was aggressive and clean, and the sort of racing I want to see in NASCAR.

  • @UltimateWheelman You sir, are the kind of fan that makes me cringe. Allow blocking and there will be wreck after wreck after wreck. if you ever raced at all you would not want unlegislated blocking. The standard practice in most series is you are allowed one move left or right but then you hold your line. If the other guy was faster and makes the pass then take it like a man and try to repass him.

Cheever spent years in Europe in F1 and World Prototype cars and unlimited blocking was big

  • @RazorRC3 You mean a Real Wrecker

  • @UltimateWheelman No idea. Dale did things much more epic and crazy than that. Don't know why people focus on it so much.

  • Would you happen to have the post race interview from Earnhardt/Cheever?
