@gonlaz This is more or less the point I was making only I was always led to believe that the reason the church chose the pagan ceremony of Winter Solstice was because of its popularity.
I wasn't aware that the reason was possibly because of wanting to control lawlessness during the festivities but I wouldn't dispute that.

@poofax56 Actually the Winter Solstice is what the Winter Solstice is truly about. Christmas was adopted by the Church to celebrate the birth of Christ (whenever the date actually was) and the church used the time of year to tone down the pagans and the lawlessness that spread through the towns during the specific time of year. They obviously and shamelessly adopted pagan symbols and incorporated them over the years.

The pagan ceremony of the Winter Solstice is what Xmas is truly about and it pre-dates the fictitious story of Jesus by thousands of years. Some Christian groups won't celebrate Xmas for this very reason, the most notable being Jehovah's Witnesses.
