Teaching Pathology From The Heart
with RuthWerner
Science teachers in massage and bodywork schools often find that their task is especially daunting: how can we engage and excite students whose primary interests are most likely not to be in the direction we must lead them? In Teaching Pathology from the Heart we identify and analyze obstacles, and discuss strategies to overcome them. We will list some appropriate goals and standards for a pathology curriculum; we will identify obstacles to making science classes work well for massage therapy students; and we will identify strategies to improve effectiveness.

Teaching Research Literacy
with RuthWerner
The past several years have seen an explosion of high-level research into various aspects of massage therapy and bodywork. Yet most massage therapists dont have the skills to actively analyze and evaluate a typical research article, much less participate in a project or take a leadership role in asking an important research question. One of the obstacles to promoting research literacy among massage therapists is a sense of a lack of expertise in this field among massage school faculty: if teachers dont feel prepared to discuss this topic, it is not surprising that their students dont feel called to explore it either. This class focuses on increasing research literacy competence and confidence among all types of massage school faculty. We will provide strategies that will weave research literacy into already-existing massage education programs; we will provide examples of information that is currently available and relevant to students and teachers; we will explore how teachers and students can apply findings to their hands-on work; and we will support educators to promote participation in the Massage Therapy Foundation's Student Case Report Contest.
