Leeds Metropolitan University students are celebrating retaining the city's sporting bragging rights as the sixth annual Leeds Varsity took place yesterday.
The sporting pride of the city's two universities was put on the line with a day of intense competition as the institutions went head-to-head in 53 competitive fixtures across 35 different sports. A crowd of over 10,000 packed into Headingley Carnegie Stadium for the evening rugby union finale which saw Leeds Met triumph 27-15 in a thrilling contest in front of Leeds Carnegie coaches Neil Back and Andy Key.
The event is the biggest single day multi-sport Varsity in the country and this year was hosted by the University of Leeds. Leeds Met have now won the trophy for six consecutive years but faced a stern test in a range of sports from their city neighbours.
Highlights of the day included a dramatic penalty shootout in the men's football which Leeds Met held their nerve to win, a 2-2 draw in the women's hockey and a comfortable 72-0 victory for Leeds Met in the rugby league fixture.
The Leeds Met badminton squad enjoyed straightforward victories in their fixtures as did the basketball and volleyball squads. Men's basketball won 86-35 whilst the women thrashed their opponents 90-19. It was a similar story in the netball as the women triumphed 76-39 whilst there was disappointment for both men's and women's lacrosse as they both lost out to their city rivals.
Speaking after the event Leeds Met Athletic Union president James Perry said: "Leeds Varsity is about more than just sporting rivalry and will promote friendship between universities, a shared passion for sport and the opportunity for each participant to display the pride of representing their University. It's fantastic to have retained the trophy for the sixth year and to have attracted a crowd of over 10,000 to watch the evening finale is testament to the appeal and popularity of student sport in the city."
Leeds Met has already celebrated a year of unprecedented sporting success, finishing second in the annual British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) overall points table for UK universities, with only sporting rivals Loughborough recording higher results over the 2009/10 season.
Excellent presentation. Very enjoyable game, and kudos to the whole crew who put this together. One thing that confused me, though I sorted it out eventually in my own head, was the "scoreboard" on the video (upper left) had the Met w/a purple background (they wore green) and Uni with a green background (they wore purple). I'm wondering if both schools wear green & purple, and it was just an accidental coincidence. It became a bit humorous for me after awhile. I'm easily amused! Again, nice job!
