I bought a PS3 (the 80 GB version) yesterday thinking it would play my PS2 games. Sadly, that is not the case, only the older 80 GB and 60 GB models are fully backwards compatible (the can play PS AND PS2 games).

What to look for to ensure FULL backwards compatibility.

80 GB Version:
Number of USB Ports: 4
Letters After Dash in the Serial Number: CECHE

60 GB Version:
Number of USB Ports: 4
Letters After Dash in the Serial Number: CECHC or CECHA

*Now the thing is, Sony stopped production on these models, so you will not find them at retail stores, your best bet would be to look online.

UPDATE: Hey guys, let me clear something up about the "PS2 System Data" download. It will not make a PS3 that is not PS2 compatible, compatible. This download is for PS2 games that use the PS2's hard disk, it will allow theses particular PS2 games (such as Final Fantasy XI Online) to use the PS3's hard disk.

  • Good vid, but what is really retarded is that you can play ps1 games but not ps2. I was having fun with the ps1 games and now I can't play the ps2 ones bc Sony is retarded. I'll stick to my xbox

  • @awaud55 I can't say I blame you. Sony really fucked up when they removed backwards compatibility

  • how can i play ps2 games on my 320 GB play 3

  • @wms278 What games did they put in the ps3 because some ps2 games were remasterd in hd for the ps3

  • That tv has,grey hair

  • The memory card says PS/PS2 because every playstation is loaded with the same software. It's meant for the backwards comparable playstation. And it doesn't take a genius to figure that out, or that there's a different Blu ray drive that makes a playstation backwards compatible.

  • I have a CECHG01, I want to play Twisted Metal Black.

  • Damn your tv is ancient

  • the 01 is the region code

  • Did you try the add on ps2 system data in the ps store. That's what other vids are showing to do. I don't know what gb they have but they show it as a slim and they show it working. Why? IDK. I wish someone would make a Detailed vid to explain it to the rest of us. I have a slim 120, tried it and it don't work!!!!! Why does their slim work to play ps2 and mines don't??

  • The reason why this is removed on the newer models is because Sony paid 400-500 dollars on the PS3 60gb and 20gb models with Ps2 bc. However on the 80gb 4usb ports, the console has ps2 compatibility. It has software emulation. This is because sony wants to have ps2 compatibility with ps2 games, it just is to save money by removing the chip in the 60gb model. It does not get as hot as the 60gb model. It plays 80% of ps2 games. Thats still good.

  • @timemaster1229 It depends on the letter. If it's any of these (A,B,C or E.) U can play Playstation 2 format software. If it's H,J,K, or G, PS2 format software is incompatible. Here's models 2 look for. PS3 with compatibility with Playstation 2 format software. 20gb,60gb, or 80gb 4usb CECHE01. 60gb gets hot so i prefer the 80gb 4usb cause of the less power consumption. DON'T GET the PS3 40gb model. IT SUCKS. I had a ps3 40gb model CECHH01 and it said This model of the PS3 system can't play PS2.
