Mike Oldfield
Incantations (part 4)

Queen and huntress chaste and fair
Now the sun is laid to sleep
Seated in a silver chair
State in wanted manner keep

Earth let not an envious shade
Dare itself to interpose
Cynthia's shining orb was made
Heaven to cheer when day did close

Lay the bow of pearl apart
And the crystal-shining quiver
Give unto the flying hart
Space to breathe how short so ever

Hesperus entreaty thy light
Goddess excellently bright
Bless us then with wished sight
Thou who makes a day of night

  • I can't believe you guys are so lucky to see this in between tv programmes! What a brilliant and inspired choice was that?!

Why didn't the BBC do that for us?

    Fantastic!

  • We were lucky to have people who cared about giving us good TV and good music back then... helped make a happy childhood. Thanks to the people at the ABC...

  • Some people say "Tubular Bells" is his best; for me it's "Incantations: Movement 4."

  • having this on your TV ... guy omg i'm green with envy

  • @brisbrett Sort of in a similar situation. My dad played this in the car when I was five or so. I just have little memories of our discussions and that little casette tape. After years of not being able to find it, I finally came across this video yesterday.

It's funny how something so simple as a melody can make you reflect on everything that's happened between when you first heard it and the moment you rediscover it.

  • This has been haunting me for 3 decades. My daughter told me to hum it into music finder on the internet, and here I am. All the memories of this time bring tears to my eyes.

  • @seamuswarren Agree with the above but think this clip was shown in the late 70's not long after Australia got colour TV in 1976, from about 1978 onwards. GEEZ I was 8 years old back then, was that really 33 years ago ?lol I have recorded or purchased a lot of the same shows Seamus mentioned, so my children can enjoy them too. Good call regarding Cat Weasel, that's one I haven't managed to acquire a complete series as yet. ABC and SBS are still the best TV stations in AUS

  • GENIUS!

  • @seamuswarren Absolutely....ABC it was Battle Of The Planets, Monkey, The Goodies. Kenny Everit and Dr Who. And sometimes this time filler which has been in the back of my mind for over three decades...I've only found out what it was weeks ago! I even asked the ABC archives - they did't have a clue!

  • Flying hart (stag) not "heart". Gives a different (but correct) meaning to Ben Jonson's verse. Actually makes more sense in the context. Re-read the verse - it is beautiful. Diana, huntress, goddess of the moon, associated with wild animals and woodland.

  • Absolutely ! Ah, tv (and music) will never be the same again. sigh.

  • God bless you for putting this video on YouTube, jelreyn. My childhood has just come rushing back to me and I am bawling my eyes out!

  • Thank you so much for uploading this - I was a kid when this was on the ABC, and whoever was in front of the TV when it came on would start screaming "It's on! It's on!" and we'd all drop everything and come running to sit and stare in wonder at those early images from space. Just beautiful.
