Tobias the angry hedgehog

An educational video about hedgehog huffing and popping. Note that if the animal had actually felt threatened, it would have bitten me. What this indicates is merely that the hedgehog is not yet completely socialized; when this is complete, the animal will be MUCH friendlier.

Hey, guys -- I had no idea anyone had left any comments (I now have notifications turned on to alert me), but I've actually written quite a bit on my blog about owning and socializing hedgehogs -- socialnetworkexile at wordpress -- just select 'hedgehog' from the tag list. Tobias is my sixth hedgehog and I've written about this in great detail, and am happy to answer whatever questions anyone might have.

How do you get it to calm down?

@RascalRileyPicturess Just by spending a lot of time with the animal -- what most people don't realize is that this kind of huffing behavior is both a defensive posture AND a greeting. The trick is just to keep in mind that just because your animal behaves this way, it doesn't mean it doesn't like you, just that this is how they interact socially.

It is a little known fact that hedgehogs keep a nest of bees hidden under their spikes to deter predators.

Yes, some hedgies bite. Sometimes they do it out of being threatened, some do it out of boredom, some do it because you just taste that yummy, and some do it because they can.

@sonicxlover135 I was bitten, hurts, leave wild hedgehog in their natural enviroment and don't stick your finger near their teeth, espcially when they're curled

@mizamazor yeah they do bite,but they don't hurt as bad,when you put it into words it sounds as if some one was drilling into you.Trust me I have sat on the computer for OVER 2 years it wont hurt as bad as you think,but their main defense system is to curl up and hiss,click and poke their quills out.They rarely bite,so don't go off saying that hedgehogs ONLY bite and not to get one,so please don't try to sound cool and talk back to me like that.
