Como is excited to be able to offer the Polar Bears International Leadership Camp to one individual that will serve as Como Park Zoo and Conservatory's next Arctic Ambassador.

The application process includes: * Writing and submitting a four-page essay about an issue that you feel needs to be addressed by the local community by April 1, 2011 4:00 PM * Preparing and delivering a five-minute presentation about what makes an exceptional "Ambassador of the Arctic" * Interviewing with a three-member panel of Como representatives

Presentation and interviews will be held the afternoon of Saturday, April 9, 2011. The PBI Leadership Camp will take place October 9 -- 15, 2011. The student will be responsible to communicate to their school regarding missing class and completing make-up assignments.

The student should display excellent public speaking and presentation skills, and have a clear knowledge of the issues facing the artic and polar bears.

Students who apply are required to be at least 16 years of age during time of travel and be in 10th or 11th grade. The student will be asked to pledge a 12 month volunteer commitment as Como's "Ambassador of the Arctic" upon returning from the Leadership Camp. This commitment would require the student to share the story of their journey through a combination of formal presentations with PowerPoint, informal interpretation with photos at Como sponsored events, and a variety of media interviews. In addition, while in Churchill, the student will work to develop an action plan to reduce carbon emissions. Upon returning home, the student is expected to work towards implementing their action plan with the support of Como staff.

There is no cost to the student to attend the PBI Leadership Camp, but the student will be asked to participate in fund raising efforts to offset the travel costs to Churchill.
