How and when to talk to your kids about sex

You know you have to talk to your children about sex at some point, but when is it really the right time? What should you say? These are good questions for Carol Weston, who's written several books on girls and teens, including "Girl Talk: All the Stuff Your Sister Never Told You."

  • The way I learnt all about that shit.... my mom threw a book at me.. when I was 10... im 12 now..

  • Because, if kids find the boundaries you set them to be overrestrictive/ think you're not taking them seriously, they will ignore you/think they know better... and then, they will have no boundaries left to follow. Which is, as you can probably tell, bad. Also, be discrete about it, allow kids to feel embarassed about the changes, don't try to get an opinion into their heads, because then, they will feel like they cannot talk to you.

  • If the kids are small, try to give a simiplified, age-appropiate explanation, once they enter puberty, be honest, because then, they will see stuff happening in their own bodies and they will talk to their peers. Don't lie, and don't create the "forbidden fruit" effect that will only make them want to do what you forbid them. tell them WHY you're worried - You don't want them to get pregnant or get emotionally damaged and so on.

  • "details" untill I was old enough to understand stuff, but they never made a "big secret" out of it, which I think was the right thing to do - because, if you create a secret/taboo, your kid will stop seeing you as a reliable source of information and find out from other sources. School teachers are often as akward as you are, I think the best way to teach kids are books written by people who are good at explaining things.

  • Then, my mother got pregnant and I was told that I would be having a little sister, which my parents thought was a good idea to tell me how babies are made - I was like three or four years old, so they got a picture book on the subject and explained it - to me, it was just another piece of knowdlege like "Days get longer in summer" or "clounds are actually made out of water" and just a few more things you have to be careful about, like cars or power sockets. Of course, they didn't get to the

  • Personally, I was never told any lies - the first explanation I got was that a woman gets when two people love and other very much. They never went and talked to me, but when they told me fairytales, they would say things like "and then, the princess found out that she had a baby in her belly, which had happened because she and the prince loved each other very much"... I sort of thought that you automatically get pregnant if you are married for some time. Xd

  • Today, most kids know what all holes are for by the time they're 10 - if they don't hear it from their peers, they get it from the internet. So if you really want to do your job as a parent here which is to guide your kids, you should tell them early, BEFORE puberty - because else, they will get that information themselves and they might get it from a source you won't like - And always remember: young people aren't stupid, just inexperienced. Take them seriously.
