Optometrist Parker CO Dr. Michael Vaske discusses eye abnormalities. Cataracts usually occur in patients during their 50s. Blurry vision results, described as looking through fog. Cataracts can be removed, if the optometry patient does not have retinal disease. It is advised to treat cataracts before vision is severely obstructed. Eye surgery for cataracts consists of removing the eye's natural lens and replacing it with a clear intra ocular lens. Lasik eye surgery is not a treatment for cataracts, but is used instead to correct near or farsightedness and astigmatism. Though glaucoma may be the most prevalent cause of blindness today, it is preventable if diagnosed in its earliest stages. Annual eye exams are critical in diagnosing glaucoma while it can be treated. Eye care patients with hypertension should be aware that glaucoma can be worsened by high blood pressure. Painless, glaucoma gradually shrinks peripheral vision, leading to tunnel vision in the later stages. Annual eye examinations and screenings are recommended to prevent vision loss.
