"Mustang Sally" was written and first recorded by Mack Rice in 1965. The idea for the song originated when singer Della Reese expressed an interest to him in owning a Ford Mustang. Mack wrote the song first with the title of "Mustang Mama", but changed it to "Mustang Sally" at the suggestion of Aretha Franklin. Wilson's famous cover of this song came a year after Mack's original and went to #23 on the pop charts in December of '66.

  • @whenvaporsvanish Ya thats right, 5/ 66 is on the money!

  • @jrd2500 Plus at 1:14, look at the tell tell, upside down, right handed strat strung for a lefty. Dead giveaway. I love these old pic's. Its like a whole other chapter of Jimi Hendrix's career!

  • @jrd2500 The pic at 1:03 is Jimi, backing Wicked Pickett on guitar in one of his many collaboration's in The Jimi James & The Blue Fames era. That pic was most likely late 65 some time. No mistaking that wild eyed master.

  • Thanks Nocaro for posting the history of this song. I didn't know that anyone made it before Mr. Pickett. Interesting how the song came about-have always loved it.
