Walkin' Jim was a close friend of my family. We met him in the mid 90's at an Appalachian Trail convention, and since seen him many times each time he returned to the local area. His death left us crushed at the loss of a dear friend, and his music continues to motivate and inspire us.
I met long distance hiker Walkin' Jim the winter of '82-'83 in Big Sky Montana where he had a winter gig in the local bar. He was probably the first long distance hiker I ever met. I ran into him in ~2001 in Davis CA after he had given a show. It was so good to see him again. Yesterday I learned that he died in September (not hiking related). In total Jim had hiked over 28,000 miles. Jim certainly knew how to "Think Like a Mountain."
