Philip Levine - the 'life performance artist' who uses his head as a canvas for creativity launched his first ever solo exhibition 'Headism' at the NL Gallery Space in London's Fitzrovia during May 2011, which was principally sponsored by Gillette.
Following on from his recent performance as a life art sculpture at the V&A (March 2011), Levine unveiled never seen before head designs in the form of photography by Daniel Regan, sculpture by Lifecast and video by Viviane Castillo. Described by founder of Art Below Ben Moore as 'a refreshing and powerful piece of living sculpture' the show was critically well received.
Levine teams up with professional body artist Kat Sinclair, continuously creating a wealth of designs that have ranged from his 1000-Swarovski crystal headpiece, to homages of such artists as Hokusai. He is fast developing a reputation as a bald icon in the fashion and art circles and is the first bald man to receive backing from Gillette as an artist.
Asked about how and why his 'Headism' work began Philip responds 'At a stage in my life when I began to realise that my days of hair were numbered I decided to turn fear into ambition and thought, how could I use my head as a canvas for creativity inspiring other bald and balding people around me? I never realised that it would result in a full body of work and a solo show at a central London Gallery 5 years on. I have never looked back'.
Enterprise Art Below displayed to London's travelling public a sneak preview of his show for 4 weeks in April, displaying his head designs on billboard space across the London Underground in such stations as Baker Street, Moorgate, and Embankment. Philip also featured in 'Art in Motion' where his work was seen in the form of a silent film on a 3-meter wide projection screen on Liverpool Street's Westbound Central Line Platform, alongside artists including Gorilla's Remi Kabaka and The Three Classicists. The video/film is the actual one seen at the exhibition.
It is very common to see Philip with his head designs at parties, events including ones by Charles Russell or various streets in major cities including New York, Tokyo and London. He is very much one of a kind.
