My dad is a USAF Viet vet. I asked him about this battle. He told me that he had
been attached to the 4133rd Bomb Wg during this time. The 4133rd, a Wing of B-52's was in Guam and flew hundreds of missions to Khe Sahn. Further, he was so proud of the Marines
for giving the finger to the overwhelming number of the enemy. He later ran into a Marine that was there during that time. When the Marine found out the my dad was with the B-52's he took him to a bar and would not let him buy a drink.

@mrjew Had nothing to do with fighting communism, they signed up for that mindless bloodbath because they were either drafted, or dooped into thinking that fighting to make GM richer was equivalent to fighting for democracy. The North Vietnamese "adopted" Communism in order to secure weaponry and support, their true motive was too re unite their country and to expel foreign powers, something that they had been doing for the past two thousand years...

the vietnameses communist was unable to flight the MiGs most of the pilots are chineses and nord koreans. Gen Vo Nguyen Giap was grilling his troop at Khe Sanh. he is stupid at all time but the shinning him like Ho Chi Minh is just a psy-war, most of them uneducation , live in poverty and joint communist changed their mane even familly name. Nixion And Kissinger leaved the Chinese win this war, not the communist Vietnamese, this is international war, American 's choiced China won this war.

My 'Duke Nukem-like' theory: If only pussy CIA had better spies in Moscow, the U.S. would multi-nuked this piece of jungle shithole with the knowledge that the soviets were unprepared to response accordingly. They nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and? Nothing happened! Many people in the States (not high on LSD or weed) believed that that was the solution. Major war won in minutes time. Were the VC any better than Japs? Same story in Iraq 2003. Nuke the fuckers! Were taliban any better than VC?

@Lachausis You are on to something regarding North Vietnamese MiGs and the Chinese border.
The MiGs frequently used the trick of taking off, orbiting just across the Chinese border and wait for the right situations or advice from radar operators to attack.
No, it wouldn't surprise me if they landed and refueled there.
The chief limiting factor being the short combat range and lack of air refueling for the MiGs.
American pilots had a term for this enemy tactic but I can't recall right now.

@Lachausis No problem, with character limits and such, it is easy to misread.
Regarding the fighter bases, it was the Korean War where MiG's would fly from Manchuria, China..across the Yalu and into Korean airspace.
The North Vietnamese airbases were indeed on the no-bomb list, in the Vietnam "conflict".
Too many Soviet or Chinese advisors present there to risk an international incident.
The actual shipping docks at Haiphong were also on the no bomb list, which is why we resorted to mines.

My deepest respects to the men who fought in this battle and war, and RIP to the brave souls who gave their lives for the noble cause of fighting communism, You will never be forgotten...
