  • @Dylvente I know you asked this question 10 months ago, but here's the scoop: compulsory figures used to be skated during "patch" sessions, which lasted 45 to 60 minutes. The ice would be divided crosswise into several strips, or patches, about 20 feet wide. Several skaters would practice at once, each on their own "patch". Problem is, the ice had to be resurfaced before each patch session, and high-level skaters did more than 1 session a day. Lots of money for resurfacing and for coaching.

  • I don't quite understand the issue of expense -- why was it expensive to train for compulsories?
