@ThomasJAckerman Thomas as a U.S. Submariner I can tell you you have no clue how hard life is on a sub and how important moral is. For you to say it wrong to spend money giving the crew a chance to break through the ice and see the outside for once while deployed on Christmas keeping you safe is sad and ignorant. They don't get to go home to their families and relax at the end of the day like you do. Of course while I may not agree with what you say I will defend until death your right tosayit

@ALB437The ice was purposely made thin at this point, probably only a foot thick or so, as this was an emergency. They sadly were bringing up two dead crewmembers.

@blahblah48856 They are called 'planes' (short for hydro-planes) and you are almost correct. British boats have never had planes on the fin (not the conning tower - that is inside the fin) but fwd and aft on the hull. Some US boats had planes on the fin.

isnt it cold in that sub?

I can only think of GoodFellas when I hear this track.

Theres nothing like breakin' the ice when around cold people.

@Pringles352
Not only was one man seriously injured, but she was carrying two dead british sub sailors who had been killed in an oxygen generation fire.
British boats use an entirely different oxtgen dispursement system than the US boats do....

you can tell because the fins (dont know what hey are called) are on the hulll not the conning tower. Sorry to be a nerd

@blahblah48856
Correct, although the newest American boats do not have the fairwater planes on the sail anymore, I don't think they have any at ALL. The planes in the rear are called the Sternplanes...
