Great video! Never knew the origin of the green sand beaches until now. Was a resident in '85 for a year and never really touched the surface of all that was on offer from the island. Mahalo to you! - Joe Anderson (Woodinville, WA)

the green sand beach is so cool!
i went there 2 years ago with my family. the sand is actually green!!!
we couldn't really swim in the water though because it was freezing and there were lots of rip tides, and we didn't want to risk drowning :P

well thanks for putting this video. actually the big island is my fav for beaches because of same reason ur talking about in this vid. i dont know why people think think white sand beaches are rare for the big island. instead of having one continuos stretch of white sand. it has a little bit of white, black, green, and grey. my fav is honomalino

ya that sucks about the beach that fronts hilo. the state of hawaii should clean that beach up so i can swim in it!

Lovely video thank you for sharing your knowledge about the sand. I love olivine and have a gold ring with an olivine stone in it which I wear all the time! I should love to see the green beach....may be one day....
so woudn't the beaches on the big island become sandier over the years because of coral and the fish?

@altruistichedonist
YES! But only if the rate of sand created by fish munching coral is faster than the rate at which it is washed out to sea...but this is EXACTLY why the other Hawaiian Islands, which are older, have larger, sandier beaches...
