Partido alto - Beco do Rato

This video clip, filmed just before Christmas in 2007, shows a group of young composers at Beco do Rato in Lapa. These cats are keeping alive the old tradition of improvisational samba duels, known as partido alto. Watching these guys play is like a live comedy skit, each of them poking fun at the other, or sometimes someone in attendance, always bringing in current events and popular culture into their rap.

This clip has subtitles (I did the best I could, as I can't always hear what they're saying). They covered lots of current events, including world subjects like Bush, Saddam Hussein, and bin Laden... all in the Christmas spirit!

I love the moment when the guy in orange wraps up the improv, gives a hooray to samba, and everyone breaks into song. I only wish the video lasted longer.
