On Nov. 6th at 2132 UT, asteroid 2009 VA barely missed Earth when it flew just 14,000 km above the planet's surface. That's well inside the "Clarke Belt" of geosynchronous satellites. If it had hit, the ~6-meter wide space rock would have disintegrated in the atmosphere as a spectacular fireball, causing no significant damage to the ground. 2009 VA was discovered just 15 hours before closest approach by astronomers working at the Catalina Sky Survey. It is expected to be 5-11 meter in size cruising across at 10 km/sec.

  • if its still in orbit, maybe next time we wont be soo lucky.

  • seems small compared to the other ones

  • Woah,that was close!!

  • ergg even my religion is saying that the end of the world is near, not sure when

  • what's the actual or exact size of this asteriod? if it is as large as in one of the islands in Hawaii, then we kiss our asses goodbye!

  • It's only 7 meters--it'll burn up in atmo.

  • good, ill be dead by then ;) will suck for my next generation kids tho (If impact) :(

  • Its ok, its next closest approach will be on Nov. 7th, 2166 between 1pm and 10pm UTC.

  • so this thing is going to orbit until it eventually hits us?
