F Blues with some left hand comping along with soloing with the right hand. This video was shot for The Vibes Workshop, a website for vibists run by vibist Tony Miceli.

We just finalized the design for my new signature model mallet by Vic Firth and the mallets are now available. The mallet features a weighted core, two layers of varying latex and tightly wrapped thin yarn. I was looking to create an all purpose mallet for vibes and marimba that sounded good from playing solo to performing with a band. The mallet creates a very big sound, sounds fat and round while still retaining clarity at all dynamic levels. • Hi,

Yes, a jazz player will usually add tensions to the chord as well as play various types of chord voicings. Some voicings may be closed (smaller than an octave) while others may be open. I think if you study some jazz theory and harmony with a piano teacher or pickup a book, that would be very helpful. Good luck with the vibes.

  • Dear Ed,

    I like it!!!!!

What kind of electric piano do you use for comping?

    Hope you are well,

    Best,

    Richard

  • Hello Richard,

I'm doing well here. I hope you are as well. Glad you enjoyed the video. I use a Technics electric piano. The sound and action are pretty good.

    Best, Ed

  • Mr. Saindon I've been a fan for a long time. I'm a vibes player (amateur) in Iowa City. Your playing is marvelous and I've learned a great deal from your videos. I hope to meet up sometime.

  • Hi,

It's nice to hear that you're enjoying the videos. Let me know if you come through Boston at any point in the future.

  • Yep ... sounds a little like Bobby Timmons meets Red Garland

    Thanks for sharing,

  • Hi,

Thanks. Bobby Timmons and Red Garland is a nice compliment. Both those guys both had a great time feel.

  • hi,

great playing, and i have a question a bit off topic. i play jazz vibes also but i just got started this year. I know it's important to use different for chords, but is it a given that a jazz musician will always use a voicing and not play the straight chord? what if you are sight-reading a piece? thanks

  • Hi Ed,

    What a lesson this is!!!

Touch, sound, time feel, lines, counter lines, DEVELOPMENT!!

    Only 454 hits so far??

    Where is everybody??

    Gustavo

  • wow- i wish i had half as much 4 mallet independence as you do.
