@1973nitram I bought this in1975,when there was a bit of a swing comeback in the disco's believe it or not. It was originally recorded by Benny Goodman with Martha Tiltonin 1939. Nice to learn a bit of history about when this first came out. Marvellous vocal by Martha Tilton too.Pax to all from73soulboy.Xxx.

Good old USA Stabbed in the back as usual. No good dead go unpunsished.

@stev1963hit I think the whole thing has been simplified, mainly by Hollywood, for the benefit of Americans with pointy heads, who wanted to forget the fact that they had financed the Nazis, and were infested with pro-Fascists and white supremicists. t was a complex situation, so theyre-write it as "Britain stands alone" "all the French are cowards" "America saves the day" and "er... let's try to ignore the fact that the commies bled thed Nazis dry".

The original recording of this song went to number one on the charts the second week of May 1939 (based on record sales, juke box plays and radio station requests).
I think that the legend of "standing alone" is rather unjust to the Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans and Indians who fought by our side from the first, as well as the French, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Belgian, Norwegian and other troops from occupied Europe who risked their lives to escape to Britain and continue the fight - but the defiant survival of our Island definately provided a beacon for these people, and I am proud of that..

@TheBelovedButterfly -Spot on bruv, for me the whole 'stand alone' thing is legitimate when contrasting the bravery of Britain with the callous self-interest of the US,right up until Hitler declared war on them. But you are right of course, many other nations share that honour.I find it particularly galling to forever be told what a worthless bunch the Poles are,or how gutless the French were back then...short memories eh!

@stev1963hit Anyone who thinks the French are gutless should check out their military and their track record since WW2; as for the Poles, my grandparents took in Polish refugees who never saw their families after the war because of their decision to fight with Britain - because they were sold out to the Russians, who used to kill them on their return to the "soviet zone". They were our highest scoring pilots in the Battle of Britain, and we would have lost without them.

@TheBelovedButterfly -Read a great book on S.O.E. last year-the compliments rightly heaped on the insane courage of the Polish Resistance would be the perfect riposte to those with anti-Polish views in this country.....but of course, people like that can't read! Thanks for your comments, agree with every word.
