The Devil Horse

PLEASE READ!
Basically, my horse is a moody bast*rd.

he is pretty much always like this over the stable door which causes me great amusement. he's never actually bitten me but he's gotten a few ppl who have walked a bit too close =p

he actually doesn't mean to bite he just has this weird thing about space etc, if i had the door open he wouldn't do it. he is even worse when he is eating, he flykicks and everything.
he especially hates my dad but has actually improved so much, yup! this is an improvement!!

he is a sweetheart usually tho =D it's only cause i had to get him out of his stable to trot him up and then he got put back in just as all his friends were going to the field. i'm a mean mummy.

we met the man who bred him a few months ago and apparently his dad, Glenlara, was really grumpy and you wouldn't go anywhere near his stable if he was eating. this explains alot. and also, apparently Charlie was "a bugger to break" that also explains alot more about my stubborn beast, he he.

anyway, fingers crossed end of next week we are trotting again =D but gonna check with vet etc and my aunt is coming down to do some weird massage stuff and electrolysis things =s it's really annoying cause we were meant to be doing the Pony Club show jumping at Burghley this year but obvs can't! but i just want him to be better =)

Maybe he doesn't want to be locked up in a cage? How would you like to live in a cell?

@jlh6310 ha ha! it's hardly a cage! he goes out all day and is only in his stable at night and is very happy in it. he wouldn't go in it or be settled in it if he wasn't. this is just him when he wants his dinner.

My ex race horse use to be like this as he never grew up in a natural herd environment and was always stabled and confined..After I started seeing from his point of view and turned him out to socialise properly in paddock with other horses his behaviour changed dramatically! He was a little extreme sometime but I realise we weren't speaking the same language.. That's when I started with Parelli natural horsemanship and he's improved in leaps and bounds! Maybe that could help...

@horsewhisper85 it doesn't bother me. it just comes and goes. he's always better when he can go out but he can't always as he gets cold easily and at the yard we have to be careful if it's really wet so the fields don't get ruined. i love him whatever he is like. it's not a big problem...he's never bitten me! it's also a good way 2 tell if he's pissed off about something or not lol. oh and we do natural horsemanshop stuff with him which has nevr helped wit his grumpyness bt makes him gd 2 handle

Some people think behavior like this only comes from abuse and mistreatment. Natural temperment has more to do with things like this than a lot of people think

@jmdnarri yea, he's always been like this. i've had him for 5 years and he hasn't changed at all and i treat him very well. as i send in description his dad was very grumpy so i think that explains it!

My horse does almost the exact same thing! but not when you open the door and instead of the biting motion toward you she turns her head and bites the wall....she had some abuse in her history but is a aweetheart in the ring and well anywhere

@angel162222 naughty and bite. he'll probably get better with age, if they have been weaned quite young they can be pretty bitey/nibbly so i'm sure he'll grow out of it.

@angel162222 yeah, we thought that with Charlie but apparently his sire was horrible in the stable, you wouldn't go in with him if there was food in there. Charlie is similar but thankfully not too bad, i think it's just in his genes but he get's worse when kept in or in the winter. He's only bitten me once in the years i've had him so he's not too bad! He's worth it anyway. is your yearling gelded? although slapping the muzzle isn't nice you have to make sure they understand they can't be

my yearling does that... we've only had him for six months though.. my dad thinks the past owner must've done something to him for him to do that.... sadly the only person hes bitten is me... my dad usually slaps his muzzle and i tell him hes not supposed to do that, but he still does... oh well i hope he can grow out of it.
