Davis College Republicans shot footage of the controversial Occupy UC Davis protest. This video is the raw footage, demonstrating the other side of the controversy: the Occupy protesters surrounded UC police and gave them an ultimatum, "If you let them go, we will let you leave." After exercising extreme patience, these officers used pepper spray to free themselves from the angry mob of students barring their exit. Here is a link to an article on the subject:

I've seen the footage. I'm not fooled.

The MLK comparison fails because, well, this protest was not about civil rights. At all. Refusing to allow the police to leave an area until they release your buddies is a threat, and highly illegal.

I'm a 20-year-old student with a hell of a lot less money than anyone at UC-Davis, but I don't pretend education is my "right," and I'm sick of being lumped in with the selfish, indoctrinated idiots who do. I don't want to be a part of this generation anymore.

I fail to see how this video should redeem the pepper spraying reaction to simply loud mouths. How is this showing the other side of the coin? The sad evidence here is that those cops did not seem to have acted in anger to get a point across but rather as their duty to do so and if so there should be some reevaluation here. I could go on but it would take too long and the Davis College Republicans who posted this don't have the time of day for me anyways. Peace to all of you.

And for example, homeschooling is a form of private schooling, and the only adversion I've ever heard (muttered, that is) amount to that it is overwhelmingly used and beloved by religious parents...to "indoctrinate" the "American public" (their kids). As if anyone has the final say in what passes for real education, or its inverse. Gov't CERTAINLY doesn't. So it's scary that people utilize gov't to try to alleviate their private grudges in such ways, but that's the reality of the nanny state.

Education (literally the concept of developing wisdom) is inherently a private, human affair. It wasn't institutionalized for millions of years, it doesn't need to be now.

Secondly, privatization isn't a backwards step in the least (and the "public-private" dichotomizing comments against seem an undue phobia, because they're almost never reasonably backed up). Why? Private enterprises have to compete with each other (and they improve by doing so); government doesn't have to compete with ANYONE.

Government operation of an institution is not a heinously backwards step anymore than private control of an institution is. You can find instances of both being successful and both being failures.

As society progresses, becomes more technologically advanced, and more wealthy, citizens should find more and more of their necessities fulfilled without having to worry about not having access to them. This includes education and healthcare, like it includes a police force, fire department and roads.

I'm from a family of public school teachers and it is quite possible to believe firmly in something, like education, without wishing it to be a "right." "Right" is nowadays doublespeak for handing an institution over to the government for validation, which is the most heinously backwards step that can be taken.

Education is more than a right. It's a necessity.

There's only one group of people who benefit from having a populace that can hardly put 2 and 2 together. My guess would be that you're not part of that club.

regardless of whether they blocked the police in, they weren't being violent they were just sitting there and the pepper spray was just a bit of sadistic fun for the officer

When the police are unjust and fail to protect and serve it is the duty of the people to assert authority over the police. The cops were operating outside of the law and the students that refused to let them leave until justice was served are heroes. They put justice above their own well being and stood their ground in making what they knew was a dangerous ultimatum.
