The video is from my May 2010 show at the Neuhaus Cafe in North Dallas - I think the first time I performed Rikki live, inspired by Michael Crane and his fabulous Steely Dan tribute band called Naked Lunch (the William Burroughs novel from which the name Steely Dan was taken) - they are simply amazing.

I enjoy selecting cool songs that are a bit different than what's normally done with a single acoustic guitar and vocal. Admittedly I cheat - with my harmonizer, but it works live, and it is very consistent with the solo recordings I've made over the years. Even so, RIKKI was a stretch and challenge for me - I think the result is fun though.

The audio track for this video clip was created Sunday afternoon July 25, 2010, self-recorded by Mike O'Neal - on my new Tascam Digital Portastudio recorder. This is my first project with the new toy recorded completely from scratch. I did a guide track to sync to the video as close as possible. RIKKI deserved to be done "right", but it is very close to the way I perform it live - the only difference is one additional acoustic guitar track to support some of the complex Steely Dan instrumentation - whew! Also, I sang all the harmonies "myself" instead of using my Digitech harmonizer. My Taylor 615 is such a joy to play...

Finally, for the record - after a good amount of research on this song, I claim only a slight and modest understanding of what and who RIKKI is about, but I sure can't tell you what it means. :-) Those Steely Dan boys are a sophisticated and complicated thinking bunch...
