hmm...reminds me of an old ahmed abdul malik album I picked up a while ago...really out there, sounds primitive, yet so beyond most of our ken...genius.

Just saw him live in Dublin with Julien Arguelles and Michael Formenak - absolute motherfucker.
Endlessly creative!

Yeah, and who's not boring?? One of those other "cats" who's still out there trading eights in Wynton's big band? Rainey is a great player and you obviously have s**t in your ears.

Tom rainey is no doubt the greatest improviser on the drum set that the world has had in years.
I'm a young drummer, (about 15 years old) and i have about 20 cds with him on it and i love coping what he does.
its even fun to play along with him!
Some great ones in particular are:
Brad Shepik- places you go
Drew Gress- 7 black butterflies/spin & drift
Tim Berne- The sublime and...

Tom Rainey is one of those all too rare drummers who refuse to look at a trap drum set in any kind of conventional way. I suspect that he would be just as happy sitting on the floor in his kitchen hitting pots and pans with a wooden stick...a wonderfully pure and enlightened approach to percussion that many young players, too focused on gear and technique, would do well to emulate.
