Ashoka De Silva is the new Chief Justice. He was sworn in this morning. The swearing-in took place before President Rajapaksa at Temple Trees..
He succeeds outgoing Sarath N. Silva. Ashoka De Silva becomes the 32nd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. He is an old boy of St. Anthonys College, Kandy. After graduating from the University of Ceylon, he was enrolled as an Advocate of the Supreme Court in December 1972. Mr. De Silva joined the Attorney Generals Department in April 1974. He became a Deputy Solicitor General in 1988 and a Senior Deputy Solicitor General in 1975. After a 22 year service in the Department, he was appointed as a Judge of the Court of Appeal. He became President of the Court of Appeal in 2001 and was elevated to the Supreme Court in August 2001. Justice De Silva has also served as a permanent Judge in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa, Presidents Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa were present at the swearing-in ceremony.
