Chipster is an autonomous firefighting robot, originally built in 2003 for the Trinity Firefighting Robot Contest. The relatively fast robot navigates a maze, finds and extinguishes the candle, and returns home. Controlled by two Basic Stamp BS2 microcontrollers, it uses 4 Sharp GP2D12 IR ranging sensors and 3 SRF-04 ultrasonic sensors for maze navigation, and a Hamamatsu UVTron for flame detection. Unique to Chipster are 2 independent servo-driven baffles that selectively shield the UV sensor, allowing the robot to home in on the flame using only a wide-angle sensor. Chipster placed 10th at Trinity in 2003 as well as winning a "Spirit of the Inventor" award for the UV baffle system. This bot also won firefighting at The Eastern Canadian Robot Games in 2004, and won the Penn State Abington regional firefighting competition in 2007. Chipster is now enjoying retirement after a "hot" career.
lol, very nice :) Mine uses 1 sharp sensor for front and side distance measurement, with servo switching the sensor position. I'll be adding another sensor so I can eliminate the servo for the competition. I can't drive my wheels at the speed I want because the sensor won't have enough time to get a reading, lol. Check out the vid in my channel if you want. Let me know what you think :)
