From 2004 onwards,Prof. Wangari Maathai had a very esteemed title added before her name;Nobel laureate. This was for many the crowning achievement for a woman whose life had for many years been marked by strife in Kenya. Yet some of the key freedoms, including the freedom of speech found their way into Kenyan culture through those very struggles. John-Allan Namu spoke to two journalists that covered Wangari when she was reviled by the government at home, but revered abroad.

  • why do people always praise you when you die?

  • wow..

    Well put, Well said

    I like I like.

  • What a great legacy! This woman has had great impact with her life. A true hero of Africa.

  • Everyone attending the funeral should honour her by bringing and plantinga tree.....R.I.P Wangari

  • Its sad when somebody dies people start listening. This woman went through her divorce because she was too opinionated, the moi regime frustrated this woman calling her a mad woman. A lesson to african men, respect you women treat them as you would your mothers and sisters, We need women for mankinds survival. For women are nurturers just like this woman. We may not have the physical strength but our endurance for pain and suffering surpass men by far.

  • Since independence women role in national contribution have never been rightfully recognised,be it freedomfighters, mothers, akademics profesionals, its something that has been in the society and it needs to change. Personally i took it very hard when Prof. Maathai was given the post of assistant minister(aibu)Think of the role Wambui Otieno played yet her burial would be less attended to that of Atwoli(if he dies!)

  • death has robbed Kenya a prophet who was a stranger in her own homeland...a fighter against a corrupt society: she paid the ultimate prize for her country..for those who dared oppose her....shame on them!

  • This is why Rutto and associates should not be entertained and trusted to lead this country. R I P mama

  • If what Maathai stood for resonates with you,it is merely because you're both branches of the same tree.So honour her with more trees.

  • Perfect Reporting John Allan! Wangair was a true legend and I am blessed to have lived during her time! God bless your work Wangari!! R.I.P untill we meet again!!
