is there any astronomical significance to the first day of our calendar years?

also, images of mars taken with the dobsonian stopped down to about f/12. several 0.005 sec images were stacked in registax to produce the final image. that image was then compared with the mars profiler from sky and telescope to determine what side of mars was visible.

mars rotates every 24 hours 37 minutes (with respect to the stars); compare this with earth taking 23 hours 56 minutes (with respect to the stars). thus, you get a slightly different view if you look at the same time every night.

there's a link on the registax site about running it on linux under wine. i only remember what wine was like shortly after linux came out; i assume it's a lot better now. so, yes it's only for windows, but there's a solution for running it under linux.
