@idontknowu42 Is there a website where I can check that out? Top fuelers are generating in excess of 2000 HP, it's hard for me to imagine a boiler system that could supply the needed steam for that much power, even if one downrates the HP to steam HP (We know that a 5 HP steam engine will do as much or more work than a 10 HP gas engine under many circumstances). That's a very nice beefy engine, is it brass?

very, very, very, nice.

yes this is true, but it also produces a lot of tourqe and is great for heavy loads. Steam powered drag cars were banned because the top fuel and nitro couldnt beat them on the quarter mile, think about it ;)

these engines are so easy to build. Do you find alot of air leaks with this kind of engine? I want to build one to power a small RC car but I'm wondering how effecient they are and if they're the type of engine you want running under stress?
Is that a packing gland where the piston shaft comes out of the cylinder? What did you use in there?

Yes, that is a packing gland at the rod end of the cylinder because the model is a double acting steam style engine. The packing in the gland is graphite coated yarn from a piece of water pump packing, but teflon cord for faucet packing would work just as well or possibly even better .
Thank you for looking----don

I checked with my husband, and he says it is a heavy engine and not very efficient--uses a lot of air.

My husband isn't able to comment at the moment as he recently had surgery. (actually 2)

Could you tell me what you use to generate the compressed air?
Thanks

Thanks for looking. I have a Craftsman 30 gallon compressor in the garage and run the air line into the shop when air is needed to run my little toys or the mister on the mill/drill.
