  • Seriously, these guys don't know about the recession? Of course welfare spending has gone up after the economy tanked so badly. The welfare reform of the 1990s cut the vast majority of the "freeloading" in the system, and made it so real people who are trying can't even benefit the way the system originally intended. Any further cuts would cause a tremendous amount of suffering for people in a world of hurt already. There are many ways to cut the deficit without putting it on the poor.
