Her sister ship SHARES (in part) the modifier "THE WORST" ...USS PORTLAND (Ca-33) on November 13 (Friday) 1942 fought in Iron Bottom Sound in the WORST NIGHTIME NAVAL BATTLE (as evaluated by experts) ever. AND MY FATHER Seaman Herbert R Roach was there on the Searchlight Platform when it happened.
Thirty six brave men died that night when a Jap destroyer torpedoed PORTLAND. My father salvaged three pieces and I found them in his effects after he died

You look at these men and hear the stories they tell. It just bulls you over!! The word hero is sometimes over used. However in the case of the men aboard the Indianapolis the word hero seems insufficient. Thank you all for the price you paid for me and my family!! Once again my words seem insufficient.......

Quint was on that same boat & was later done in by a shark during the filming of "jaws".

I wish there was respect given by the youngsters of today like I see on here, but lets get real now, it is not the same anymore. God bless all those who sacrificed all so the rest of us are still here. Great great comments drandolph to your post.

Thanks. 'Uncle' Cleatus told me he'd really like to meet me sometime and I agreed to try to get to one of their reunions. They truly are the 'greatest generation.
I read 'In Harm's Way' about a year and a half ago. When I saw my last name on the crews list, I looked him up. Cleatus Lebow is my 2nd cousin once removed. We've written each other a couple times; he actually signed a copy of 'Only 317 Survived' and sent it to me. He actually watched the flag being raised on Iwo Jima! He celebrated his 86th birthday the day before I had my 56th. Thanks to all the men aboard the Indianapolis and God bless you.
