This is a quick tutorial on how to perform the Spinning Backhand Throw. This is a special offensive technique that can be used during a game. The concept involves performing a 360 degree spin while holding the dodgeball with your arm straight and releasing the ball at the end of the spin in a backhanded motion.

The advantage of this throw is that you can hide your throwing motion. Most dodgeball players who use catching to their advantage will attempt to read their opponent while they throw so that they know where the ball is going. With this throw, the opponent has a hard time seeing the throw coming and if it's fast enough, they may not see it coming at all. Also the momentum from the spin makes the ball fly much faster. The disadvantage is that this is a difficult throw to do; even with practice. The aim is the biggest problem because during the spin you take your eyes off the opponent before you throw and sometimes you can't locate them until after you release the ball so you'll have to rely on a ranged area for aim.

A few things to remember: Don't overdue this throw or you might get dizzy. Make sure you understand how to spin correctly so you don't land wrong on your ankle while spinning. Try to keep your opponent directly in front of you and practice releasing the ball so it flies straight. The spin and the throw are already deceiving enough so you don't have to try angles unless you're up for the challenge. Finally, knowing that your aim won't be as accurate with this throw, it's better to use this throw when there are several opponents instead of one opponent. That way, you have a greater likelihood of hitting at least one of them.

Practice, practice, practice. Remember, the biggest hurdle for this throw is timing the release point because realistically, you're shooting blind due to the spin. So keep working on hitting a consistent spot.

  • I have a question. At school we play pin dodgeball and we use those balls but smaller and I want ti know if tehres a certain way i should grip it and release or what. Please help

  • @JumpstyleJordan - There is no set grip for this throw. The grip should just work best for your control. As for release, that's gonna be up to a judgement call. Practice until you figure out where to release it cause it's different for everyone.

  • @frgt10drgn ok thank you and any tips on just plain throwing harder?

  • @JumpstyleJordan - Lol it's just like working out. You wanna have a stronger arm, you have to practice throwing hard every week until your arm builds on it. However, it's not about the muscle, it's about the snap. Think of a whip. You have to snap your shoulder, elbow, and wrist all in one motion to throw a ball hard. Then it's all about practicing till your arm gets used to it without throwing your arm out.

  • What size of rubber balls do you typically use? And what size of foam?

What do you prefer to use?

  • @GawdImTom - I usually use 8.5 inch for both types of balls. If it's rubber though, I prefer a little deflation in the ball to allow for a better grip to use curving type of throws.

  • @pfunk81 I love to get headshots. When I was in Elementary, this big touch mufu was yellin at us from the other side, and I cocked my arm back, and pushed it forward with my elbow behind and let it go and it hit him right in the face. Best. Luck. Shot. Ever.

  • This was actually very easy to learn, because I do Muay Thai, and the spinning backfist is the same exact move.

  • Too high probability for head shots, which are illegal in my league. It looks cool though and you have some nice power there.

  • We call this "The Grendel"

  • Extreme Dodgeball 101...this is a cross between Benedetto's spin throw & Justin Hill's "tornado" (except Hill uses 2 balls).

  • Holy Shit!

  • these are precisely the moments when i appreciate youtube for the good things it can do.

  • I'm definitely gonna try this dude thanks

  • damn nice arm.
