TV3 News interviews Dr. Patrick Treacy about the introduction of Zyban to Ireland in 1999. Clinical studies have shown that ZYBAN reduces the craving for cigarettes as well as withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking cessation to a significant degree when compared with placebo. Reductions in the following withdrawal symptoms were most pronounced: irritability, frustration or anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness and depressed mood. The usual recommended dosage is to take one 150-mg tablet in the morning for the first 3 days. On the fourth day, begin taking one 150-mg tablet in the morning and one 150-mg tablet in the early evening. Doses should be taken at least 8 hours apart.

  • Zyban Tablets should banned. It has serious side effect. I feel depressed , out of space, blurred vision, I dont remember my conversation with people yesterday, its a very dengerous drug!

  • Thanks for that. Interestingly enough, when asked if they were paying more for Zyban than cigarettes, the latter was costing most but smokers paid the price without complaint.

Your comment 'help with future attempts to quit' is telling and perhaps no product/therapy can be really effective unless accompanied by a strong desire to quit.

  • Zyban should not be taken for more than 2-months. It is unlikely that you will experience any problems stopping the tablets when you get to the end of the course, but you may choose to reduce the dose slowly over the last few days of the course to avoid any withdrawal effects. Further courses of Zyban can be used to help with future attempts to quit

Further courses of Zyban can be used to help with future attempts to quit but you need to think carefully about why you started smoking before you consider trying to quit again.

  • I've spoken to a number of people contemplating using Zyban who, by and large, were put off by the cost of the product should they fail and end up binning them. I've also met people who swear by them.

How long does one have to continue taking the tablets?
