The 3-year-olds had their moment on March 21 in the Grade 3, $115,000 Oklahoma Quarter Horse Derby. Top qualifier Spit Curl Diva came through as the 4-5 wagering favorite to win by a head under jockey G.R. Carter.
Owned by Elbert Brown of Seminole, Okla. and trained by former Remington Park jockey David Brown, Spit Curl Diva rallied to win getting past Fly On Lake in the final yards.
She ran a big race. Shes a good filly to train. She came back good after the trial and was training well, said David Brown. This is the first stakes Ive won here as a trainer. Im pretty excited about it.
Spit Curl Diva covered 350 yards in :17.917 and paid $3.80 to win, $3.40 to place and $2.80 to show. Fly On Lake paid $4.60 to place and $4.80 to show. Cuz Eye Said was third and paid $3.60 to show.
The win in the Oklahoma Derby was the sixth for Spit Curl Diva and her second career victory at Remington Park. An Oklahoma-bred filly by Spit Curl Jess from the Some Dasher mare Some Kinda Diva, she made $36,800 in the derby to run her career total to $375,105.
