Catalonia seeks secession from Spain

The Spanish region of Catalonia is to hold elections on Sunday that could determine whether it eventually breaks away from the rest of the country. Artur Mas, the region's president, called the poll two years early after failing to negotiate a new financial deal with Madrid. The idea of separating has gained popularity in the last few years, with the region's economy - which accounts for more than a fifth of Spain's income - a key factor. Al Jazeera's Barnaby Phillips reports.

only the name of spain and flag would have to change, maybe to port of spain and the flag would be red yellow and center the coat of arms of our flag... oh and the language would be the same here. and also all spanish would have to speak portuguese too... lol and no bullfighting

but in fact its really stupid they are asking for independence now that there are almost no real countrys in europe, theres no borders, same currency, same laws everywhere, i think it would make no difference except for some money staying in catalonia some times and none getting in from Spain thats for sure and maybe even problems for catalonia to sell their product and make busyness in Spain like we also have if it wasnt a diff lang. would not have a problem with my country being part of spain

if catalonia gets its ind then spain is finished, places like galicia or estremadura who are poor and ned catalonia to exist basicly will go under or seek also independence, that was always the problem with spain it isnt a country its several states all glued together and race has alot to do with it and culture aswell, castillian culture is basicly despised by all ppl in iberia, bull fighting, flamenco crap and other their horrible food and imperialistic temper

The Catalan people have struggled for their liberty and self-government during the last three centuries.

The People of Catalonia, would like to hold a referendum on whether or not they would like to become independent from the Spain. The Catalan people have their own distinct language, culture and traditions that are not being respected by the Spanish government.

European people and people of rest the world, please keep an eye on us, we are peaceful people who are asking for the right to have a vote to decide about our political status but the Spanish government has already stated that they will use “all means available” to stop us (including the army).
