A second test of the Williams WR27 Auxiliary Power Unit's starter motor.

This test was with 24V. The oil system has been re-fitted, filled and purged of air.

The test went well except that I found oil in the exhaust, this means a leak in the rear bearing assembly or (worse) in the feed/return pipes that run though the bearing housing support struts. I'll have to decide if the leak is bad enough to risk dismantling the engine.

  • Now that the engine has been run to full speed the oil leak has disappeared completely. Scavenging from the rear bearing is dependant on HP air. So it's possible that all the low-speed spinning was the cause, as there will have been oil pressure but little scav air pressure.
