If there's a difference between how positions within the dault pages of each category are calculated and how the average person assumes the positions within the dault pages of each category are calculated, I think it is only fair to reveal that to the public. People want to see that things are transparent.

If partners are creating content which users or YouTube editors are having an influence on in some way that isn't obvious, such as number of comments, I think the public deserves to know.

Americans must have an accurate view of the world and political speech is critical.
I notice that for other countries, the default page is most viewed, not "top news".

And it's the News & Politics category that I'm really concerned with.

  • There is a huge problem on youtube if people know how youtube orders the videos.

If it was made public how youtube orders the videos, then certain users WILL deliberately tailor their videos to exactly those algorythms, and all you will get in the top 100 will be a bunch of attention seeking sub whores.

  • @dangerouslytalented It's funny as I started to read your comment, I didn't know where you were going with it. I disagree with your conclusion. I think transparency is the best approach and the one that respects the people. If it is all out in the open, I think it is LESS likely the system will be rigged or gamed. I think at the very least people should be allowed to know if actions are being taken to demote or marginalize certain videos. I explain it in my video and recent question in new video

  • @representativepress I have come up against some people who do this kind of thing. If they can find a way, ANY way of cheating the system, then they will take it, and use it.

So many of the... eccentric... things that youtube does are because they are trying to combat those who are cheating the system.

  • @dangerouslytalented The only thing I see as far cheating with "popular" or "top news" was some of my videos getting cheated out of being listed within the top 100 when going by the totals of thumbs ups and other things, they very clearly should have been. One time is was even most views for a given category and still not there. I don't know what the mechanism is doing this but I can't see how making it transparent would mean someone could "take advantage." Can you even give me a scenario?

  • Truthfully I seek out your videos for the content. I understand the frustration caused by the "manipulation" folks at youtube. You have to remember, this IS their show. As ugly as it may appear, they control what we CAN an CANNOT see and hear. Since GOOGLE stormed in the rules have changed. We must rely on each other to spread the news. In your case, viewers should be encouraged to share and promote content which they feel deserves a wider audience. (hint)

  • vidmakr, we don't know why it is happening and I never said Youtube is doing it as their own policy. It is possible, but only one possibility. Whatever the reason, there is nothing wrong with pointing out that it is happening. PERHAPS it can be fixed. I certainly think it is healthy to make these things public. And it is important to do so because a distorted view of what videos and what Ideas are getting the public's interest undermines our democracy.

    I agree that sharing helps.

  • Thank you for the effort you have put into these videos. I agree that the system is not transparent, and I feel it should be. What can we the viewers do? There does not seem to be any way to contact YouTube, except to post a comment, and who knows if it gets looked at?

  • @representativepress If the cheaters know when the system updates, for example, they could get a bunch of votebots to vote exactly the right time to force a video into the top 100,or they could have Breitbart or somebody release and publicise it RIGHT at that point for example. And if everybody tried timing it for the right time, then the servers would get overloaded...If the cheaters knew exactly how they did it, they would use it to gain advantage.

  • I understand your frustration, but don't give up. it's very important that, even if there are attempts at stifling your videos or messages, you continue spreading your messages. We need all the voices we can get. Keep up your amazing work.

  • so who decides what is or is not "top news"?
