And yet another legendary Northern Soul smash, that we filmed for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". Emanuel Lasky sadly passed away in 2006, and this treasured performance seems to be all that survives. This song, "Lucky To Be Loved By You", was one of my earliest Northern Soul discoveries as a teenager, when I bought it in 1970 in a shop in Miami, and took it to Les Cokell at the Twisted Wheel. No-one had ever heard of Emanuel Lasky back then on the embryonic Northern Soul scene, and then, early on at Blackpool Mecca, we discovered "I'm A Peace Lovjng Man" and "I've Got To Run For My Life". When I did Motorcity in 1989, Emanuel had agreed to be the lead singer of the newly reformed Lovetones, but changed his mind at the last minute, handing it over to Buford Glanton. Anyway, in 2006, I was none too happy when reading Detroit fan Rob Moss's musings after Emanuel's death, bemoaning the fact that no-one ever filmed him, when he knew full well that we had done so for "The Strange World Of Northern Soul". I guess this will always be the cross I have to bear with these purists and so called Soul Police !!!! So, back on track, this record first broke in 1970 at the legendary Twisted Wheel in Manchester. It was a piece of Motownesque joyful exhuberance on the Wild Deuce label from 1965, that golden year, and as fine a piece of Northern Soul as you could ever wish to hear. And the very quintessence of mid Sixties Detroit. We recut it in 1998 when we were filming our marathon six disc, twenty four hour massive documentary about the entire history of the Northern Soul scene, which contained 131 specially recorded performances of all the classics, and is still available on a six disc box set from Wienerworld. So, in 1998, we tracked Emanuel down and filmed him in his house in Detroit, and this time he was more than happy to work with me, to make this one and only one-time performance especially for us, for our ground breaking Encyclopedia Britannica of Northern Soul, and I am so glad that we did.

  • Thank You! I used to regularly attend stage shows at the old Liberty Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio that featured the late great Emmanuel Lasky. I had no idea that he was recorded for posterity. Hats off to Ian Levine and the good people of England who have preserved what I thought was Lost and forgotten. He was among the best of those who never made the "big time".

  • Professionalism oozes from his very pores so much talent RIP Emanuel
