Ducats Memories: A collection of Pictures and Newspaper Articles about the band set to music. I'm still trying to learn how to embed an audio file into my Myspace site and/or my blog... It may be easy but I seem unable to figure it out.. But this youtube stuff is easy, so here is a really kick ass song by the Ducats from 1968 ( i think) some some pics from back in the day to go with it.. .
As far as I know it was recorded somewhere in Boston with the 68 equivilant of a ghetto blaster.
The line up then consisted of My dad (Jim Crewe) on rythem and organ, Lew Skinner on Lead Guitar, Bob Battiste on Bass, Dave "Nipper" Parsons on Drums and Claude Caines is Singing.
Its a medley of a few tunes. This one is kind of short, but they (Ducats) were known for merging on song to the next without stopping.. Nipper would change the tempo seemlessly and just blend it on down.
As the story goes, Johnny and the Huricanes were in the audience when they first Auditioned in some bar near or in Boston, and gave them a standing "O" as a show of respect..
As you listen to the tune, watch for the lead break.. More specifically, listen for the bass run behind the lead break. As I dig up some more and more of these tunes, I'm more and more impressed not just with Lew's guitar work, but Bob's bass playing. They play well off each other. I'm told they'd get pretty wild on stage and that it would not be uncommon for Bob to play it behind his back or over hsi head.. Not uncommon by todays standards, but in 68, that (let alone the bass playing itself) was pretty 'Far Out'!
Hope you enjoy this..
Such wonderful memories bought back listening to this and seeing the photos. They were the best band back then without a doubt.
