A weekend project I finished this Sunday, the Dreamachine allegedly puts the viewer into a self-induced lucid dreaming state and/or a induces relaxation. To use it, you sit a few feet away with your eyes closed in a dark room.. to achieve relaxation.. who knew?

The results weren't too impressive so I'll probably return the turntable today, just thought I'd share it with anyone interested in trying it.

The visuals were akin to facing the sun with closed eyes, coupled with dizziness.

The only enjoyable part of the experience was how the spiraling colors seemed to orbit my center of vision.. the spinning motion revolved, which was unexpected. Also, though the light-source had one color, my closed-eye visuals were in all colors, so that was sorta cool as well. Otherwise, pretty disappointing.. I wanted the experience of lucidity at a snap! Oh well, onto other things.

Here are the plans I used to build it, http://www.noah.org/science/dreamachine/ , the materials cost roughly 120$. Exacto-ing the cardstock, and straightening some coat-hangers to keep it sturdy, took about 3 hours. Easy, though not much payoff. Enjoy

  • its supposed to be 45 rpm for the standard size or you can lengthen it by like 24 inches for a 78rpm

  • @85mariapatricia yeah, that's what the link in the vid description says. the turntable in this vid spun at 45rpm, though it was capable of running up to 78rpm.

  • lol how much was the turntable?

  • @chinguidinsky It was about 50 bucks.

  • I can't help but think the inherent flicker of the CFL bulb might have a different effect than the less noticeable flicker of a regular incandescent bulb.
