Boy I Am (2006 Documentary Female-To-Male Transsexuals) Part 2 of 5

While female-to-male transgender visibility has recently exploded in this country, conversations about trans issues in the lesbian community often run into resistance from the many queer women who view transitioning as a "trend" or as an anti-feminist act that taps into male privilege. Boy I Am is a feature-length documentary that begins to break down that barrier and promote dialogue about trans issues through a look at the experiences of three young transitioning FTMs in New York City--Nicco, Norie and Keegan--as they go through major junctures in their transitions, as well as through the voices of lesbians, activists and theorists who raise and address the questions that many people have but few openly discuss.

As a gay transman I do find radical feminists who oppose our existence to be discriminating. In the gay community amongst gay men I am treated with more respect, They seem to get it. Not all, but more of them. Living as a gay male is in NO way easier than living as a female, and living as a trans person is harder than living as a bio person. Stop calling it a cop out. It's harder than bio lives are. Who would EVER choose this life unless there was no other option to preserve ourselves?

It is sad to see our LGBT community so seperated at times. What radical feminists need to realise is that we are all working at the same thing, to live our lives with equality and freedom but most of all with happiness. We need to fight together as minorities, not against each other. We are all individuals and have different experiences. We are not all the same and need to be treated with respect. None of us fit in boxes, we are each on a spectrum. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

I don't understand how gay people can say that gay is not a choice and that you're born gay, and then turn to trans people and tell them THEY have a choice and are somehow crossing some boundary like homophobes are accusing them of... Really don't get it...
