this is a survey of light pollution from my apartment. the still shots were made with the exposure time set so that the image was closer to what was visible to the unaided eye. the 30fps rate of the camera made the sky too faint.

the middle picture is of the eagle nebula (M16), and was taken from the mountains about 70 miles north of l.a. by one of the lab directors for the physics dept. at usc. it was done with an 11" celestron scope. the central area is called "the pillars of creation" -- the subject of one of the most viewed pics from the hubble space telescope.
