So a few days later she packed all of her things in a small bag and hid it under the bed, then she went through all of Charlotte's things and packed what she could, placing the rest in a black sack and stuffing it in the attic with all the other clothes she had grown out of or didn't wear anymore. Charlotte knew not to say anything, knowing her mother's antics and instead just continued playing with her dolls. Selena decided to occupy herself by cooking, and she made Nick's favourite: vegetable quesadillas.
He was home by his usual time, around half six, and carrying a cabin suitcase filled with the little belongings he'd wanted to take with him: Selena had smiled when she saw him pack the photograph Paul had taken two years ago, of the family. They had all been so happy then. Charlotte had also forced him to take her favourite teddy bear, Pinky, in case he got lonely. It was sweet, but Charlotte had always been a Daddy's girl.
She'd run out to him, Charlotte on her heels, and thrown her arms around him, bursting into tears at the sight of him and knowing what she had to do. He was filling out again, with some meat on his bones, and she could see in his face that his health was back on track. His eyes were clear and bright, whereas they had been bloodshot and teary before he'd left. His body language was better now, too. He pulled her into him, rather than leaning on her for support, and kissed her hair. Charlotte threw herself at him and clung to his leg as if holding on for dear life, to which he chuckled.
"Hey, Lottie," he beamed, ruffling her curly hair. He was the only one that called her by that nickname, and she loved it. She seemed to sigh of relief and relax against him. "How are you?"
"How are you, Daddy?" she asked, smiling and standing up. "Did the people make you all better? Because if they didn't, I'll --"
He laughed and scooped her up into his arms, kissing her forehead. She giggled and Selena reached up to wipe a strand of hair out of her face, tears falling uncontrollably at the prospect of leaving this man. He was incredible, and she loved him more than she loved herself, but she couldn't be so selfish as to stay and subject him to her abuse. Selena knew she needed help, and she knew just where she would find the support.
Nick set their little girl down and turned his attention to her, kissing her passionately and holding her in his arms, and she felt the strength of his muscles and let him just hold her. He pulled back eventually and wiped the tears with his thumbs, caressing her cheeks. "I love you, Sel," he told her, and pecked her forehead.
"I love you, too," she replied. "I'm so glad you're home."
"Me, too," he smiled in return, and bent down to take Charlotte's hand to lead her inside. "C'mon, sweetie, let's get you inside so you can tell me about school." He gestured for Selena to follow, and she did, knowing that tonight was about showing him how much she cared for him, no matter what. She walked into the kitchen to finish dinner, and listened in on their conversation.
"...And they sent me to the principal's office!" Charlotte cried, outraged. "I didn't do anything wrong! I just told her that the singer was obviously edited! She told me that I was being unrealistic and out of line. I mean, the guy that sings it can't sing! You could sing it better, Daddy!"
He chuckled. "Thanks, sweetie, but you've got to realise that sometimes you say things at the wrong time. Please try to keep it in from now on if you have nothing positive to say, Lottie. I don't want another phone call from Miss Braun, do I?"
"But even I could sing it better, Daddy! And she was playing it wrong on the piano. The song's supposed to be slow and sad and she was playing it way too fast! I was trying to show her how to play it right and she yelled at me!" she said. "It's not fair!"
"I know, honey," he replied. "Maybe next time you should just show her, even if she yells at you. That's how I got people to pay attention to me. I wouldn't take no for an answer. You seem to have got mine and your mother's passion for music. Show them what you can do, Lottie. And we'll stand by you no matter how many times you get into trouble."
"I love you, Daddy," she said softly.
"I love you too, babygirl," he responded.
"I'm really happy that you're home now," she continued. "Mommy's been crying all the time when you weren't here. I got really sad because she wouldn't tell me why she was upset."
