This was a great video, thanks for sharing. Any chance you could do a video on putting an eye splice in in singlebraid?

Great video, a little hard to follow for us noobs though. Any chance you could dumb it down as I am not getting this perfectly. Can you tell us where you got the fid with the threaded end? That is so cool not having to tape the line on to the fid every time!! Also would you consider making a video putting in a Thimble.. Thanks, I hope to get really good at this as I work on Coast Guard ships now.

I would be happy to talk you through any difficulties you are having, but I doubt I'll be making another splicing video anytime soon.
The only thing different about splicing onto a thimble is that you have to know about how much smaller the eye will get from the eye size that you mark. Remember the part where I pull the core from the cover and before I mark it I "cheat" a certain distance from the exit point. Either a short fid length or a half fid length depending on the

characteristics of the line. Just wrap the line around the thimble and then make it a little bigger because the eye is going to be smaller than you mark it.
It's kind of a trial and error thing but the same splice.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have problems.

Thanks for showing this. I now can do it! Would you also know how to splice wire rope to double braid rope. I know this is an old fashioned process but the sheaves in my mast are too narrow for all-rope and I have no other option
Thanks for posting if possible

can do wire/to/rope - very time consuming. consider changing your masthead sheave for all rope

Can you give me rough dimensions of the fid?

I have different sized fids for different sized line. So it is difficult to answer your question.
The easiest way would probably be to measure a set of fids at a West Marine store or something like that.
