russ klein was a great tenor sax player and his brother johnny was a great drummer when lawrence turned him loose.  the welk band could really swing on these dixie tunes, he had some great players.

vincentfromia is full of great info. The

clarinetist spelled his name Don Bonnee

and was with the post war Ray McKinley

band and other names. Don also made

an album when with Lawrence called

"Don Bonnee Octet" on Dot records. it

features Don with two of the other reed

men with a rhythm section. It went out

of print rather quickly. Nice LP.

Thanks! You're right. He was involved with the Dorsey bands, but it was the Miller Band which he lead. I read that he had led his own band, too, much in demand at Hollywood bashes. BTW re Don Bonet (sp?) being with Teagarden, so was Henry Cuesta. I have a remote broadcast of Teagarden's group featuring Cuesta. Cuesta, in turn, was related to the great Casceres jazz family. Trivia: supposedly it was Bobby Hackett who suggested that Cuesta try for the Welk job.

Jimmy Henderson went on to lead the Glenn Miller Orchestra in the late 70s till about '81 I believe.

The cornet is the great George "Gus" Thow who played with the Dorsey Brothers Band. He was with the band when the Dorseys had their famous split. He was a production assistant later on the Welk show and wrote a lot of the tune announcements. Trombonist Jimmy Henderson also played with the Dorseys and went on to lead Tommy's band. I remember him from the time that he sang Jimmy Roberts' part in Good Night Ladies. He cracked a note on purpose and broke up Alice Lon who then hit him.

WOW! Now this one is from a while ago ... you can see this clarinet man with Jack Teagarden on some other YouTubes. The drummer and tenor are familiar but the trpt and bone I don't know. ALl terrific, of course!
