One of the saddest songs I've ever written...A song about songwriting and slowly losing the impulse to write.

I don't write much anymore;
Sorry, I don't know what to say.
It's too painful to ignore
'Cause I felt it slip away.

And you know it makes me cry—
Like a lover that's been lost—
When the feeling's passed you by,
And you know just what it's cost—

It's like you're stumbling in the dark,
And you don't know where to turn.
You're looking for a spark
Just to feel it burn...
Let it burn...

Knowing that it's gone
Is not enough to bring it back;
It's like staring at a train
Moving miles down the track.
You can laugh or you can cry,
But that's all that you can do,
And lying to yourself
Is never gonna' make it less true—

It's like you're stumbling in the dark,
And you don't know where to turn.
You're looking for a spark
Just to feel it burn...
Let it burn...

I don't write much anymore.
Sorry, I don't know what to say.
But I don't write much anymore,
So I guess I'll slip away.

  • wonderful

  • @cbyfate Thanks, Connie. I haven't posted much in the last year, but I just put up a new piece, and I have about six in the last six months (but only one original) plus two more written but not yet recorded. Thanks for stopping by and listening again, I really appreciate it.

  • Thank you Tim ,and keep them coming ! You rock

  • Thanks, Connie.

  • For someone who doesn't write much anymore, you sure just wrote a great song, one that I'm sure plenty of writers can relate to at some point in time.

Always nice to listen to your points of view.

  • Thanks, Mary. I wrote this in 1980, after I returned to teaching full time and quit performing publicly.

To be honest, because of your interest in "Second-String Songman" and your wish to "hear" it, I recorded my CD, I Could Write You A Song.

Then, in answer to requests from your site, I began with MySpace, then YouTube, and now Blogger. So, thanks to you, I now have 2 CD's, 74 original YouTube videos, 10 original songs on MySpace, and a bunch of poems and essays on my blog. Many Thanks.

  • Tim,

It is a sad song, because it's a good song and it reminds us of all those other good ones. Hope the new season is coming!

  • Hi, Tim,

I thought I heard it before. I still like it. It's great that you're getting your music out there. I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys your commentaries through song.

  • Beautiful song, brother..
