June 12, 2009 - What you would have seen if you were watching analog television over the air in the Los Angeles area. KABC turned off their transmitter, but KNBC (not seen here) and KCBS will continue to broadcast a "DTV Transition" video loop for some time.

  • @onionofdeath: Actually, it's quite a bit dumber than that. Look closely at the presenter. The footage is *stretched*. What? Where in anyone's on-air data flow should they be needing to stretch 4:3 material, then crop *that* output for 16:9? I can't imagine broadcasters handling standard-def anamorphic footage, so what gives?

As long as they've been carrying mixed resolutions and aspect ratios, I can't believe how often I see something appear with one of these characteristics mangled.

  • i was laughing at the part when KCBS has the same nightlight service (a loop of NAB's nightlight service) as WNBC in New York City, NY.

  • And they just cut it so abruptly.

  • why is like 80% of all analog shutdowns have this SAME local news channle?

  • 1:06 KABC-TV Goes snow

1:44 KCBS-TV Goes to demo from NAB

  • The camera's focus on the television is not choppy like other videos. I give this 5-stars.

  • KTLA has signed off - but KCBS is still airing the NAB message as of July 10th. JG

  • Good video, but depressing as heck. I feel like old good friend died watching all these analog turn offs

  • So KCBS-TV (the former KNXT) simply transitioned to the "nightlight" format in the middle of a commercial? That's not very ceremonious for the end of the analog phase of the longtime "West Coast flagship" station of CBS-TV.

  • interesting how the video was produced as a 16:9, even though it was obviously intended for letterbox screens. FAIL on the gov't part, I hope important textual info wasn't cut-off as a result.
