12 Days ❄ Day 9 (Chapter 9)

[ Tuesday December 21st 2004 ]

The next day after a busy lunch shift Nick arrived with a big smile plastered upon his face. "Selena, I was wondering do you want to help me bake some Christmas treats for my family?" he politely asked.



Selena looked up from pouring coffee into the customers cup, "as much as I'd love to, I'm a bit busy at the moment" she said before dashing to the kitchen window to pick up her order.



"Go on Selena, I can take over your shift" Leighton said with a smile.



She shook her head and collected the plates from another table, "I couldn't ask you to do that" she replied.



"No I mean it, go on" she took the plates from her grasp. "I'll just tell Maggie something came up, I'm sure she'll understand," she said in a reassuring tone.



"Are you sure? Because I don't want you to—"



"Selena" she said with a smile, "just go you'll have a fun time"



A smile creased her facial features, "thank you so much" she gave her a quick hug before she untied her apron and grabbed her bag from behind the counter. "Looks like my plans have changed, I can join you for baking"



"Great, well lets go" he opened the door and let Selena walk out first. He turned around and mouthed a quick 'thank you' to Leighton before leaving the diner.

When they reached his apartment the kitchen had already been laid with utensils, ingredients and the recipes needed to create the desserts. "So what are we baking?" she asked.



Nick tied an apron around his waist and put his chef hat on to make it official. "First I thought we could bake some shortbread and then some gingerbread cookies" he said whilst he washed his hands.



"Great! Lets get started," she said with glee.



They began to measure and weigh the ingredients with intensified concentration. Once everything had been weighed out Selena began to rub the flour with the butter using the rubbing-in-method in the large bowl.



Nick began to observe her when a soft chuckle escaped his lips, "you're doing it wrong," he pointed out.



"Ohhh am I?" she asked raising her eyebrows.



He stood behind her and he was close enough to smell her vanilla scent. He threaded his fingers through her and let the flour slip through them with delicacy. "That's how you do it," she spoke softly which make Selena's stomach do a summersault.



"I think you missed a spot," she pointed out.



"Really? Where?" he questioned furrowing his eyebrows in confusion.



"Right here," she grabbed some flour from the bowl and flicked it in his face with a huge grin.



"Hey!" he chuckled and flicked some back at her. They were both covered in flour and were laughing so hysterically that they had collapsed onto the floor in each other's arms. It was in that moment that Selena knew that he was the one.
