The Choir of Manchester Cathedral, under the direction of Christopher Stokes, perform the hymn 'I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say'. Treble solo by an unknown chorister.

The hymn is performed to the tune 'Kingsfold,' around which both the Irish folk song 'Star of the County Down' and Ralph Vaughan Williams' ballad 'Dives and Lazarus' are based.

Text:

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
"Come unto me and rest;
lay down, thou weary one, lay down
thy head upon my breast."
I came to Jesus as I was,
so weary, worn, and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
"Behold, I freely give
the living water; thirsty one,
stoop down and drink, and live."
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
"I am this dark world's light;
look unto me, thy morn shall rise,
and all thy day be bright."
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my Star, my Sun;
and in that light of life I'll walk
till traveling days are done.

  • Beautiful. Thanks for the upload!

  • Sorry just to correct you, it is Kingsfold not ford. And it isn't Star of the County Down. They are similar tunes but this is a traditional tune. It also isn't Dives and Lazarus. Vaughan Williams is famous for collecting traditional tunes that had died away and arranging Christian lyrics to them. This is one of them (ie it is by Vaughan Williams) and the traditional lyrics and song is called The Unquiet Grave. Sorry to burst your bubble if I have. I am a big VW fan.

    Such a beautiful melody
